Registration marks are placed strategically on large webs of packaging materials. As the web of material is fed down the production line, packaging machines cut them into individual labels. Registration marks feature slight contrasts of color that communicate to registration sensors where packaging machines should cut, fold, seal, and glue the web of materials to ensure the label is assembled properly.
Manufacturers face a complex challenge, as registration marks need to serve both a factory and marketing function. The marks must feature enough contrast that registration sensors can detect the difference between them and the background material, while also being disguised to blend into the overall brand packaging and provide shelf appeal for end consumers.
